Saint-Pierre and Miquelon: A major milestone for waste oil collection

Particularly involved in France’s overseas territories, Cyclevia is implementing a new waste oils collection system in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. An extraordinary initiative both in terms of the level of investment and the system itself to offer a response to a unique situation in France.

During its visit to the islands in September 2023, Cyclevia identified urgent waste oil collection and treatment needs. Indeed, if waste oils collection from professional structures is already well-organised - namely thanks to rigorous efforts by the collection-transfer station operator Guibert Frères - private individuals benefit from only two municipal recycling facilities. Whilst these facilities are theoretically sufficient to meet volume requirements, in reality they are outdated and present a risk of local ground contamination and pollution of the nearby ocean.

Faced with this observation, Cyclevia decided to invest heavily, going beyond what is required in its specifications, and to design a specific system to facilitate and secure waste oil collection.

The producer responsibility organisation equips, free of charge, each of the two municipal recycling facilities with a 1000 litre tank. These stainless-steel tanks, manufactured in the south of France, offer increased durability and resistance to rust, in the extreme marine environment of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Designed for up to 30 years (40 years if protected by a shelter), they are made from a single material, making them easier and cheaper to recycle at their end of their service life.

A 3rd tank has also been specifically designed to be loaded onto the ferry which transits between the two islands. An essential precaution to ensure the safety of this hazardous waste which can potentially be adversely affected by rough crossings.

These tanks facilitate waste oil collection in a place where infrastructure is limited and guarantee secure transport which complies with hazardous waste standards in force. Although the volume of oils on the islands’ is low, Cyclevia is convinced that no territory should be left behind and that these investments are essential to encourage more sustainable and safer waste management.
